"Ane"

"Ane," my first word in our "Z" language

An important word in this culture

Pronounced "ah-nee"

Tortilla

Here in San Cristobal de las Casas, there is a tortillerĂa (tortilla "store") on almost every street corner.  They are sold by the kilo, or 2.2 lbs. That's a lot of tortillas! Tortillas cost between 8 and 11 pesos a kilo. They're made with corn flour, and although they're good, handmade tortillas are so much better! Ellie is a fan of wheat flour tortillas, which are a lot more expensive. So friend suggested that I make my own flour tortillas! And of course, I have three instant helpers!

Ellie is making the dough into balls.

Placing the ball carefully in the tortilla press.
Pressing the tortilla, with all her body weight.
On the comal (griddle)
